Loving, Biblical Answers on Homosexuality In the next year at least one of these things will happen in your life: • A family member will come out of the closet and expect you to be okay with it. • Your elementary-age child's curriculum will discuss LGBT families. • Your company will talk about building a tolerant workplace for LGBT co-workers. • Your college-age child will tell you your view on homosexuality is bigoted. Are you ready? In their role as pastors, Adam Barr and Ron Citlau have seen how this issue can tear apart families, friendships, and even churches. In this book they combine biblical answers with practical, real-world advice on how to think about and discuss this issue with those you care about. They also tell the story of Ron's personal journey from same-sex attraction and sexual brokenness to healing. Truth does not preclude kindness--and a good dose of humility is necessary to love our neighbors. With sensitivity and winsomeness, this book will offer an honest but inviting message to readers: We are all in need of the healing that can only come from the truth of the gospel.

These essays are collected from the Fourth International Conference on Literature and Psychology held at Kent State University, 7-9 August 1987. In selecting the essays for this first collection to emerge from the varied conferences now being sponsored by the Kent State University Center for Literature and Psychoanalysis, Vera Camden has brought together representative contributions from two major contemporary schools of psychoanalytic criticism: object relations and Lacanian theory. These essays define the questions which emerge when both schools are brought into the kind of association engendered by this conference, offering not so much a resolution to opposing positions as a fuller articulation of the space each occupies and a fluidity of discussion which has characterized psychoanalysis since Freud's earliest discoveries. Each contributor is concerned with the place of the unconscious in the determination of the human subject and its representations. Whether the approach is primarily clinical or literary, each identifies and analyzes the anguish of the incomplete self--a sell which looks to construct, identify, regain, or even deny meaning. A crucial difference emerges among these authors as to how the experience of human alienation and the quest for identify is to be analyzed. Some would suggest, after Jacques Lacan, that the task of analysis is to recognize the illusion of the unitary self and to reconcile the individual to that state. Others would contend the task of analysis is to recover, by the transference relationship, the lost unity missing in childhood and reflect in adult object-relations. These essays range from clinical perspectives in psychosis and creativity to critical readings of Joyce and Shakespeare to recent applications of brain research to traditional psychoanalytic notions of the human subject. The richness and variety in this collection bear witness to the continuing impact of psychoanalysis on literary and cultural studies.

Despite all the misguided ideas about Him, God is good, relational and has your best interests at heart. Furthermore, when it comes to sex, young people may be pleasantly surprised to hear what their Creator has to say about the subject. Like a present to be opened at Christmas, God has a perfectly crafted season for you to enjoy this special gift. Let it be known that God says, "Yes to Sex!" His answer isn't "No," just "Not yet!" If you're willing to take the challenge, you can say the same. As a young adult you have a lot to deal with. I realize you already know that but perhaps it’s appreciated when someone identifies with the tough world you live in. There aren’t too many people these days that want to be in your shoes. Between the challenges of school and thoughts of the future, looking for a real friend, family drama and still, after all that, endeavoring to enter adulthood with some framework of character and fear of God, your life can probably get overwhelming. Let’s not even touch the larger than life issues like trying to find out who you are or fitting in. I do not want to make you feel any more insecure than you might feel already or predict a grim report about your future. I just think it’s important to recognize your life for what it is. You have a huge future ahead of you in God but you also face a legitimate uphill climb to reach it. Simply put, your life demands courage. With that said, it is quite possible that sexual integrity isn’t necessarily a fight you will choose to take on. Christian or not, it may seem easier to live sexually active and not bother swimming against the current of sexual acceptance or even deal with the peer pressure of resisting. Your thoughts might be: “There are bigger things intimidating me right now and I’m not sure if I have the energy or vision to fight off this battle. I’ll just let whatever happens happen—and pay the price later and hope for God’s mercy. Maybe He can help me fix whatever problems I might create now through sexual activity later after I’m married.” I don’t condemn you for thinking that way sometimes. Besides, you’re probably one of the many young adults who loves God and wants to do what’s right. If you could snap your fingers and remain sexually inactive until you marry the right one I’m sure you would. Although it doesn’t work that way, perhaps if you at least had some helpful tools and enough inspiration, you would probably give Biblical sexual purity a real shot. Well, I believe that God has a message for you to hear and my hope is that some of those helpful tools will be found in this book. Sexual integrity according to the Bible is not about perfectionism. Just as easily as Christians can get sloppy and loose in this area, the best of us, on the flip side, can get legalistic and critical. We won’t do well in either extreme. God simply wants your whole heart. God loves and wants the real you, both when you’re at your best, and when you’re at your worst. He wants you to welcome Him in every part of your life, including that part of you concerning sex, relationships and future marriage. God sees your desire to please Him and your passion to reach for Him in this area. You wouldn’t be reading this book right now if it weren’t true. Again, God’s will is your sexual purity; but thankfully His way is always best. His instructions are for our benefit. His heart is for our good. Therefore this God-journey is intended to bless you. May this book be fuel for your specific and adventurous journey. You are special to God. Your desire for sex and marriage is God-given. He understands you and is bringing you into a place of significance and value.

Sometimes, grace gets messy. Caleb Kaltenbach was raised by LGBT parents, marched in gay pride parades as a youngster, and experienced firsthand the hatred and bitterness of some Christians toward his family. But then Caleb surprised everyone, including himself, by becoming a Christian…and a pastor. Very few issues in Christianity are as divisive as the acceptance of the LGBT community in the church. As a pastor and as a person with beloved family members living a gay lifestyle, Caleb had to face this issue with courage and grace. Messy Grace shows us that Jesus’s command to “love your neighbor as yourself” doesn’t have an exception clause for a gay “neighbor”—or for that matter, any other “neighbor” we might find it hard to relate to. Jesus was able to love these people and yet still hold on to his beliefs. So can you. Even when it’s messy. “Messy Grace is an important contribution to the conversation about sexual identity for churches and leaders. Caleb's story is surprising and unique, and he weaves it together compellingly. He states his views clearly, leaves room for disagreement, and champions love no matter where you are in this conversation.” —Jud Wilhite, Sr. Pastor, Central Christian Church

There are those who go to gay bars and salsa clubs with rosaries in their pockets, and who make camp chapels of their living rooms. Others enter churches with love letters hidden in their bags, because their need for God and their need for love refuse to fit into different compartments. But what goodness and righteousness can prevail if you are in love with someone whom you are ecclesiastically not supposed to love? Where is God in a salsa bar? The Queer God introduces a new theology from the margins of sexual deviance and economic exclusion. Its chapters on Bisexual Theology, Sadean holiness, gay worship in Brazil and Queer sainthood mark the search for a different face of God - the Queer God who challenges the oppressive powers of heterosexual orthodoxy, whiteness and global capitalism. Inspired by the transgressive spaces of Latin American spirituality, where the experiences of slum children merge with Queer interpretations of grace and holiness, The Queer God seeks to liberate God from the closet of traditional Christian thought, and to embrace God's part in the lives of gays, lesbians and the poor. Only a theology that dares to be radical can show us the presence of God in our times. The Queer God creates a concept of holiness that overcomes sexual and colonial prejudices and shows how Queer Theology is ultimately the search for God's own deliverance. Using Liberation Theology and Queer Theory, it exposes the sexual roots that underlie all theology, and takes the search for God to new depths of social and sexual exclusion.

Living the Truth in Love grew out of the desire to provide answers to the questions posed in the Lineamenta for the Synod on Marriage of 2015 in Rome: “How can the Christian community give pastoral attention to families with persons with homosexual tendencies? What are the responses that, in light of cultural sensitivities, are considered to be most appropriate? While avoiding any unjust discrimination, how can such persons receive pastoral care in these situations in light of the Gospel? How can God’s will be proposed to them in their situation?” (40) People who want to be instruments of Christ’s love to those who experience same sex attraction—among them our children, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, parents, friends, and coworkers—seek guidance on how best to do so. We need to listen to the stories of those who experience SSA and the stories of those who have accompanied them on their journeys. We also need to ground our responses in a genuine Christian understanding of the human person and of human sexuality. More and more of those who have left the gay life style are telling their stories, stories that disclose that engaging in homosexual sexual acts has not delivered the happiness sought. Fortunately, for many there is a second chapter to the story, a beautiful story of falling in love with Jesus and his Church, of finding an ennobling understanding of the truth of the human person. Their journeys and transformations have often been facilitated by family members and friends, counselors and spiritual directors, who have been affirming and accepting of those who experience same-sex attraction without approving all their choices. Those who courageously face the realities of their lives and resolutely make the changes necessary—a process generally involving a significant amount of suffering, prayer, commitment to the sacraments, and a refashioning of relationships— eventually find peace, not misery, in accepting the Church’s teaching on sexuality. In their willingness to undergo conversions of many kinds and in their desire to seek holiness and live lives of complete self-giving, they become witnesses of the saving power of Jesus’ love and the graces he bestows on those who love him. This volume includes essays that lay out the Christian view of the human person and of human sexuality, essays that challenge the bifurcation of sexualities into “heterosexual” and “homosexual.” Topics include an explanation of the meaning of the word “disorder”, a discussion of the therapeutic power of friendship, and an application of St. Pope John Paul II’s personalism to the question of same-sex attraction. Psychologists and counselors explain various ways of affirming those who experience SSA and of leading them to experience the power of Christ’s healing love. Several of those who experience SSA tell their touching and inspiring stories.

A definitive master work from the world's leading Christian apologist. Respected apologist Ravi Zacharias was once sharing his faith with a Hindu when the man asked: "If the Christian faith is truly supernatural, why is it not more evident in the lives of so many Christians I know?" The question hit hard, and this book is an answer. Its purpose is to equip Christians everywhere to simultaneously defend the faith and be transformed by it into people of compassion. In addition to writing several chapters himself, Ravi Zacharias brings together many of today's leading apologists and Christian teachers, including Alister McGrath and John Lennox, to address topics present in the very future of worldwide Christianity—from the process of spiritual transformation to the challenges posed by militant atheism and a resurgent Islam. Destined to become a classic, Beyond Opinion is a touchstone that will affect Christians around the world.
